Nepali Migrant Dreams in the American Landscape: Report Launch

The Nepali Migrant Dreams in the American Landscape report, launched by the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS) in collaboration with the Embassy of Nepal in the United States and The Asia Foundation, is a comprehensive study on the lived experiences of the Nepali diaspora in the U.S. This seminal work provides critical evidence to inform policy changes by establishing a baseline understanding of the diaspora’s socio-economic status. It explores their migration journeys, settlement patterns, and integration into U.S. society while identifying opportunities for deeper engagement and partnerships between the Nepali diaspora, Nepal, and the United States. The study also aims to foster proactive dialogue and networking between the Nepali diaspora and the Government of Nepal to support Nepal’s vision for prosperity and development.

By analyzing the challenges, contributions, and socio-economic characteristics of the Nepali diaspora, the study highlights their significant role in shaping transnational communities. It seeks to promote their well-being and success, both in the U.S. and in Nepal, while offering actionable insights for policymaking and initiatives. This report underscores the importance of leveraging diaspora potential to strengthen Nepal’s development goals, creating meaningful opportunities for collaboration and mutual growth.

The panel discussion, titled “Bridging Borders: Nepali Diaspora in the US,” was moderated by Dr. Arun Joshi, Director of IIDS, with distinguished panellists including; Mr. Pukar C. Hamal, CEO of SecurityPal; and Ms. Sambridhi Gyawali, publisher, author, and media owner, and a distinguished representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Nepal. This initiative aims to inform stakeholders and policymakers, driving efforts to empower the diaspora and strengthen Nepal’s global networks. The event will culminate with an open discussion and networking over lunch, providing a platform for diverse voices to share perspectives and build connections.

The event was held on December 17, 2024, at the Kathmandu Marriott Hotel.
